This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you still remember a teacher who impacted you? Chances are, he or she found a unique and positive way to reach you that was not only memorable, but life-changing. That is the environment I am working to create. I am impacting the lives of my students and I intend to do so profoundly.

I teach a mild-moderate special needs classroom with grades kindergarten through third.

The class size changes each year, but stays around 10 students. I am fortunate to have two classroom assistants with me at all times so that I may split the students into even smaller groups and administer curriculum and activities at their various levels. I work hard to incorporate both the special education and general education curriculum and I align their assignments with their grade level standards as much as possible while providing all of the unique accommodations that they require for educational success. Positivity really is the glue that hold my class together. My number one goal is to help my students understand that they are important and capable. Once they really own that truth, they are able to spread that positivity to others and that's how the cycle of growth begins and continues. Confidence is the foundation of a successful academic career.

My Project

For a special needs student, learning can be an extremely difficult tasks and kids rarely want to do things that they think are too hard. Every lesson must be approached with as many learning modalities as possible; that's why I am asking for educational games, tactile stimulating activities to benefit my students with learning disabilities and books about positive social strategies to benefit my students with emotional and behavioral disabilities. The more creative I can be in teaching them the skills they need to develop, the more chance they will have at successfully transitioning into the general education setting.

I am working to facilitate a successful transition for my students into the general education setting so they can eventually be taught alongside their typically functioning peers.

They need all the help they can get along the way and that's exactly what I'd love to give them; absolutely all of the help they can get.
