Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are autistic, intellectually disabled, speech impaired and/or other health impaired. Each one thrives on structure and routine. Their favorite time of day is "Sign-in & Calendar" when they use the ActivBoard, greet each other, perform calendar tasks, and "show off."
Our school is very supportive and inclusive.
My students enjoy participating in activities such as reading buddies, grade level inclusion, and peer to peer mentoring. Wherever we go in school, other students call out "hello" to my students and call them by name. They ARE an important part of our school community.
My Project
My students require communication icons and picture supports to enable them to actively participate in pre-requisite grade level TEKS. These supports are an integral part of their education and include PECs or picture exchange communication symbols, communication boards, icons, token reinforcement systems, individual student schedules, and custom made books with familiar photos or images. Having colored printer ink ensures that students are provided with the best communication supports possible. Laminated materials are much more durable and protect materials from being torn and chewed on.
Colored icons and pictures are not a want but a tremendous need for any special education classroom.
I also print quite a lot of photos for classroom activities in order to make language experience books that the children can then connect back to activities. Students learn best with color printed activities for individualized independent work.
