Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are autistic, intellectually disabled, speech impaired and/or other health impaired. Each one thrives on structure and routine. Their favorite time of day is "Sign-in & Calendar" when they use the ActivBoard, greet each other, perform calendar tasks, and "show off."
Our school is very supportive and inclusive.
My students enjoy participating in activities such as reading buddies, grade level inclusion, and peer to peer mentoring. Wherever we go in school, other students call out "hello" to my students and call them by name. They ARE an important part of our school community.
My Project
The spring loaded scissors allow students that don't have much hand strength to cut independently. The bingo dot markers are used with a variety of activities for students who are not able to grasp a writing utensil. The ink pads are specifically for "Word Work" where students can stamp letters to form their name or words. The markers, paint brushes, and glitter are for art projects. While the caterpillars are for our life cycles unit.
This project contains supplies for a multi-sensory approach to teaching and learning.
Keeping students' interest increases their ability to retain concepts; their ability to focus and attend to instruction and their overall time on task.
As an aside, I added food prep gloves and liquid hand soap. Our school district has stopped carrying these specific items for our type of classroom. The food prep gloves are used during meal and snack times so we don't touch student food while preparing it. We cut up fruit, de-bone chicken, prepare bake potatoes with all the fixin's and orient student's to the food on their tray. The hand soap is specifically designed for workers that wash their hands multiple times during the day. Because we "toilet" most of students, we wash our hands several times an hour.
