Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are autistic, intellectually disabled, speech impaired and/or other health impaired. Each one thrives on structure and routine. Their favorite time of day is "Sign-in & Calendar" when they use the ActivBoard, greet each other, perform calendar tasks, and show off.

Our school is very supportive and inclusive.

My students enjoy participating in activities such as reading buddies, grade level inclusion, and peer to peer mentoring. Wherever we go in school, other students call out "hello" to my students and call them by name. They ARE an important part of our school community.

My Project

Organization is everything in a high support Life Skills Classroom most of our storage bins have been thrown away this year because they are broken, have sharp edges and are not safe for the children. One set of bins will be used in a 20-cubby storage unit to hold manipulatives and other teaching materials. A photo and communication icon of what's in the bin will be placed on the outside of each bin so student's can easily navigate to and access materials. The other bins will be used to hold books and other reading materials. These will be labeled with photos and icons as well.

Providing clear visual supports and an organized classroom assists my students with communication needs and reduces behaviors that interfere with learning.

The craft tape will be used as a visual support. It can easily be put on surfaces to visually indicate a specific work area or personal space. For example, using craft tape, I can divide a table into four equal sections which allows student to see their personal space.

My students typically do not arrive at school with supplies at the beginning of the year. We rely heavily on donations to our school. We never seem to have enough paint and construction paper for arts and crafts activities.
