My Students

I co-teach a K-5 self-contained special education class primarily geared towards kids on the autism spectrum. We have combined two classrooms into one due to having lower numbers of in-person students because of Covid. Many of our students have been in the same class together since pre-k, so they all know each other well and get along like family!

We strive to make learning as fun as possible for our students so that they can stay engaged throughout the lesson or activity that we are working on.

Our students learn best through hands-on activities, explicit instruction, and small group settings. It is important to us to strengthen their social skills so that their sense of family can grow stronger through creating more meaningful relationships.

My Project

Students with autism often have a hard time interacting with others and regulating their emotions. Social Thinking has helped to make that easier by coming up with a fun and concrete way to learn about emotions. Their Superflex curriculum with the "unthinkables" and the "thinkables" gives students a way to visualize what they are feeling, which is incredibly hard for people with autism to do. Being able to assign an "unthinkable" to the emotion that they are feeling allows kids to take the blame off of themselves, and put it onto this character that has taken over their body.

Social Thinking gives kids the counter character- the "thinkable" to each "unthinkable," allowing them to learn how to change their actions and reactions in any situation.

Having a concrete way to visualize and apply these concepts makes a huge difference in the way students learn and process social skills and emotions.
