Help me give my students a variety of new materials like math manipulatives, sensory items, and different lighting options to increase their attention and retention.
My students are amazing and unique learners. They are exceptional students with varying strengths and interests. Their disabilities require creative and varied instructional strategies in order for them to access the curriculum. They are lots of fun to work with and always give me a challenge.
My exceptional students are in kindergarten through 2nd grade and need creative, hands-on activities imbedded in their instruction to increase participation and learning.
To create these lessons requires varied materials of different textures, sizes, and shapes to keep them interested. Communication is an area I focus on in my classroom. We are working on increasing communication through speech, sign language, and assistive communication devices.
Although my students have mild to moderate disabilities with sensory needs, they are smart and can learn. They will take longer to grasp some concepts or learn some routines, but they love school and learning and have a "Can do" attitude. As their teacher, it is my job to create engaging lessons that they enjoy and will attend. They are a joy to teach each day.
My Project
For this project, I have selected a variety of materials that will increase focus, engagement, and learning in my classroom. I have selected lamps, fluorescent light covers, and some glow in the dark items that will allow me to teach with kinder, gentler lighting. Many students with Autism are sensitive to bright lights and these new lights and light covers will make the classroom more manageable for them.
The varied math manipulative in my project will increase participation by providing unique concrete objects to use for addition, subtraction, comparison and more.
Another sensory issue for some students with Autism is the desire to put things in their mouths. By providing them with cups and straws they can have access to something safe that will also give them that stimulation. The indoor artificial grass rug will also provide a place for students to sit and work where they can get the sensory stimulation they seek. Thanks for anything you can donate.
