"Tell me and I'll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I'll understand."
All my students have at least one disability that prevents them from learning in a general education setting. However, they happily come to school everyday ready to take on life's challenges.
My group of students is the most delightful class of K-2nd grade students.
Most are speech and language impaired, several have learning disabilities, one is autistic and two have cerebral palsy. However, despite their disabilities, they are the hardest working group of students I have ever had. Our school is a high poverty school, and getting all the materials needed to run a successful special education program is simply too expensive for our budget. Although my students receive services by an occupational therapist, materials that focus on fine motor skills would benefit them greatly in the general curriculum as well.
My Project
The See and Solve Manipulative Kit, the Creature Builder Kit, the Peg Board Numbers, and Tweezer Tongs Sorting Kit will help to greatly improve my students fine motor coordination and visual spatial skills. They also have academic benefits as well since they will help to reinforce sorting, number recognition, mathematical reasoning and problem solving. The Tub of Inchworms will help to reinforce counting and measurement, and the Learning Letters Activity Folders will aid in letter identification and sound recognition. Learning and skill development can happen with these very kits inside the classroom!
I have always worked in school districts that were able to support the needs of their students.
However, my time in this district has been enlightening. This school is poor and financial support is basically non-existent. PLEASE help me create the next generation of intelligent, highly motivated individuals.
