Special Gardeners Get Growing with FEED USA

My students need soil, a root-vue farm and other garden materials to continue their school garden and strengthen their understanding of the importance of being green and eating healthy.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the first time you played in the dirt and found a worm, or the first time you planted a seed and saw it grow? Have you felt the pride from eating fruits or veggies that you grew yourself? I want to give all that excitement to my students, but our garden first needs healthy soil.

The students that will be involved in this project are special education students with a variety of disabilities including intellectual delays and autism.

All of our students are directly involved in the production of our garden. They get their hands dirty prepping the garden, planting the seeds, weeding, watering, and harvesting. 95% of our students come from low-income families. Many of our students are picky eaters, often seen in students with disabilities. As a result of their socio-economic status and being picky eaters, the majority of them are not eating the fruits and vegetables that their bodies need. We use the garden to promote healthy eating. I have seen students be willing to try something new when they grew it themselves. We also do cooking projects and would love to have enough of a harvest to use the food grown in recipes the students make at school and can then take home and cook with their families.

My Project

All students, but especially those with disabilities, learn through hands-on experiences. I have seen their faces light up with discovery as they have watched what they planted grow into something they can harvest. I have seen them grow as they realize what they can do when they put their effort into something and work as a team. Unfortunately, our garden is in need of new, rich soil in order to continue bringing these experiences to the students. I am asking for new garden soil. In addition, I want to bring the world of worms into the classroom, teaching students the importance worms play in the healthy soil. I am also requesting a root-vue and other garden related instruction materials that will allow the students to see first-hand what is happening in the garden. With the materials being requested, I am hoping the students can have a school garden that nurtures their intelligence as well as their bodies, by providing healthy fruits and vegetables to eat and use in cooking projects.

America is seeing a horrible epidemic of children who are not eating right.

School gardens provide an opportunity for students to see first-hand where fruits and vegetables come from, and gardens provides the motivation for students to try new healthy foods because they grew them. These kinds of lessons require that the learning be taken outside four walls. They require students to get dirty and learn through doing. Please, help provide these life-lessons to my students.
