It is no secret that in addition to drug abuse and sexually transmitted diseases, teen pregnancy is one of the biggest problems that plague adolescents today. Recent studies have concluded that lack of adequate preventive information is the major contributing factor to the growing number of teen pregnancies in the U.S. In addition to effectively ruining the lives of many youngsters, teen pregnancy, AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are a burden to the families involved. The taxpayers must bear the cost of these rapidly growing problems. As a Science teacher in a special education high school, I have been entrusted with the task of teaching sexual education to mentally retarded, learning disabled and emotionally disturbed teenagers. Due to their various disabilities, my students have great difficulty understanding the dangers associated with STDs, not to mention the disastrous and lasting effects they can have on their lives. Funding of this proposal would allow me to purchase "hands on" materials and models that would enhance my curriculum and facilitate my classroom instruction by allowing my special education students to see and feel many of the concepts I present in my lessons. In addition to helping them familiarize themselves with their bodies and how they function, these materials will help my students recognize the need for abstinence, or at the very least the importance of practicing safe sex.
