This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students quickly become like family to me. I am a special education teacher, working with grades kinder through 5th grade. My students and I "loop" together which means we move up grade levels together. I enjoy having most of the same students each year as well as a few new students, so that I am able to engage with them, learn their interests as well as their strengths and weaknesses, in and out of the classroom. My students qualify for special education services with various disabilities including orthopedic impairment, emotional disturbance (trouble regulating their emotions), specific learning disabilities of basic reading skills or math problem solving as well as dyslexia. I also have students who are considered intellectually disabled, autistic, or have medical issues such as severe epilepsy and traumatic brain injury.

My Project

With these materials, we can create a sensory room/motor lab for our students. This classroom could help struggling students better understand academic content as well as increase their social/emotional learning. With the help of a light table, students will be engaged in activities using sensory materials as well as manipulatives for other basic skills including math and reading. Although students would not be allowed to take the materials home, these items will help build strategies that can be used at home and in all other settings.

Students will be excited to visit the space afforded to them including the items on our wish list.

Students will have access to small group lessons using the light table. This project will provide a more supportive space students can come to for additional help.
