Sherman Elementary School is the home to a Structured Learning Classroom program which is a district sanctioned special education class where students from other schools throughout the district come to learn. An important part of our instruction is Social Emotional Learning. The 28 students in our program range from an 18 month developmental level to a 3rd grade developmental level, and their social emotional relationships and awareness reflect that. That is why it is extremely important to make sure we are teaching them social skills and how to regulate their emotions and control their impulses.
We have done a plethora of social emotional activities this year but have struggled to find a curriculum to find a program that can support our students from K-5th, until we found "A Little Spot of Feelings." A little spot of feelings uses visual aids, hands on manipulatives and catchy songs to help teach about emotions and feelings.
That allows our students of all ages and developmental levels to understand and engage with Social Emotional Learning. We have used variations of this curriculum for months and have used the free resources as well as our own activities such as a scavenger hunt to find our feelings.
To help our students continue to grow and develop socially and emotionally, we need to tap into the wide world of paid resources from "A Little Spot of Feelings". This would help us continue the work that we have started and help all of our students achieve success in social emotional learning.
