Most of the students in my Special Education English high school class are non-readers; it is my goal to change that. Their reading levels range from 5th to 12th grade. They are eager to learn even with the challenges presented by disabilities such as autism, ADHD and dysgraphia. Once funded, students will have easy access to books at their reading level.
My Project
Students are typically not allowed to write in the books we use in class, nor take them home. With A House On Mango Street, I hope to give each student a copy of the book so they can practice annotating and reading the text at home.
Students need time away from computers and with printed books: the class sets of A House On Mango Street and Maus I will provide students with access to print books which we will read aloud together in class.
The additional texts will round out our fledgling classroom library, which I am filling with books accessible for students with learning disabilities.
