Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are in a self-contained special education class for students in 7th grade through 21 years old. We have a small classroom with LOTS of stuff left from a teacher who retired last year (after 30+ years in education). Next year more students with more severe behaviors are moving up. We are in desperate need of sturdy storage that will house our valuable materials. By eliminating clutter and increasing storage, my students will learn how to keep our classroom clean, organized, and create a safer learning environment for all.

The 3-drawer units will allow for students to separate their materials and help my paras to further individualize student’s things to meet each student at their own level.

The metal cabinet will go in our restroom to keep each student’s personal items private (helping our females keep hygiene items in safe and discrete places) and our students who need assistance with toileting and personal hygiene to have access to changes of clothes, diapers, wipes, and any other needed supplies like deodorant, tooth brushes and toothpaste, or hair care items in a sanitary area away from the toilet or other germ filled areas. Additionally, this allows for towels to be folded and put away as well as cleaning supplies to be locked up in a safer way!

Students in my classroom have significant needs and will likely always need some form of support after aging out of the public school system. Some of the disabilities that my students have include Down Syndrome, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Learning Disabilities, and Orthopedic Impairments. There are also students with vision and hearing impairments as well as other health impairments that would benefit from these storage devices! We are located in a very small town in a rural area.
