Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We have an amazing library, filled with lots of choices of current young adult fiction and nonfiction. However, when our special education students come in, especially ninth graders, it's difficult to find something that's at their reading level, but still keeps their interest.
We need high/low books, that feature high interest topics for high schoolers, with a lower reading level--books about extreme sports, paranormal activity, amazing animals, cool careers, etc.
These books are written for teens, but use shorter sentences, simple vocabulary, and define difficult worlds within the text. These books will help students increase their fluency and develop their vocabulary, so they can progress on to high-school level texts.
My Project
Using these books, students will have good choices for free reading. They can work in groups and read aloud to one another. They can read out loud to their classmates when they come to the library, and help improve reading fluency.
They will have age-appropriate books that will appeal to them, while helping them improve their reading skills.
Now they won't have to check out the same books they may have read in middle school, because that's all the library has at their reading level.
These books can also get checked out to special ed classrooms and the teachers can use them in class for assignments. The best part about buying materials for the library? All students in the school get access to them!
