I manage the library at Moorpark High School. We have about 2,000 students here and it's a very diverse group--40% Hispanic, 35% low-income, students born in 29 different countries. When I came here 5 years ago, the library sat empty most of the day. It wasn't open before school, after school or at lunch. Luckily my first year, the school board restored the hours that had been cut and the library is now open all day every day. Hundreds of students come through each day to check out books, use the computers, eat lunch or just hang out. It has become the heart of our school and it's been very rewarding to see this place come to life. Now that we have students here, the challenge has been to have enough current material to meet demand. After all these years of neglect, the library is far below state standards. A school our size should have 50,000 books. We have 14,000, and 80% of them are older than 15 years old.
