There is so much that they are connecting to in this book. I can tell some of my students who are good at math and science are dreaming big when they think about space and what mankind can achieve. Some of my students that love history are enjoying the allegorical part of this book and our nation's history. All are under the trance of reading one really good vignette after another. This really was a unique read for them and they have now begun working on something that I hope to send to you next week.\r\n\r\nMy students will be finishing up with an essay that will get them to reflect on what Ray may have wanted them to be aware of after reading this book. This will be an opportunity to reflect on what they've learned about our country's history from reading this book. Their final project for this book will be to create their own art for a vignette in this book that Ray would have approved of as a potential cover to his book. High schoolers can sometimes be hard to impress, but their reaction was immediate joy. One student looked at the sturdy, reusable cup and asked, \"Wait, I get to keep this? I don't have to give it back?\" When I told them it was theirs for the year, the room erupted in a buzz of excitement. They weren't just seeing a cup; they were seeing a gift from a community that wants them to be healthy and comfortable.\r\n\r\nWe turned the first day with our new resources into a creative \"Identity Workshop.\" We spent the last part of class decorating the cups with waterproof stickers and permanent markers.\r\n\r\nI watched two of my quietest English Learners, usually exhausted by 6th period, laughing together as they compared their designs. One student meticulously labeled his cup with his name in beautiful calligraphy.\r\n\r\nNow, our daily \"water break\" is a ritual of dignity. Instead of me handing out wasteful plastic bottles, the students independently use the dispenser.
