This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Many of my students with autism demonstrate increased difficulty communicating their basic wants/needs as well as, formulating and maintaining friendships. Yet, they are advanced and engaged in technology. Having the opportunity to utilize the tablets will motivate & provide social communication.
Many of my students are in Special Day Classes (SCD) for severely handicapped students.
Some of my students have the desire to make friends and engage in social play; however, they lack appropriate social skills. It appears that they are trapped in their own world, struggling to effectively communicate their wants/needs and/or form appropriate relationships with their family and peers. To help with their communication skills, they are provided with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and are seen for speech therapy on a weekly basis.
My Project
Many students with autism spectrum disorder are extremely engaged, successful and motivated with/by technology. They would prefer to be engaged on the computer and/or with technology based activities. There are thousands of speech and language applications that can be downloaded and used to help and change the way that my students communicate within the world in which they live.
I am requesting 2 tablets for my students to use to help improve their communication skills.
Having the ability to use the tablets with my students on the autism spectrum disorder not only motivates these students but can also give them a voice so they can be heard.
Please help me give some of my nonverbal students a voice.
