Many of my students are in Special Day Classes (SCD) for severely handicapped students. Thus including a smaller classroom, with no more than 8 students with autism spectrum disorder. Some of my students have the desire to make friends and engage in social play; however, they lack appropriate social skills. It appears that they are trapped in their own world, struggling to effectively communicate their wants/needs and/or form appropriate relationships with their family and peers. To help with their communication skills, they are provided with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and are seen for speech therapy on a weekly basis.
