My students love using the pastel color erasers that sit on the end of their pencils. These high quality erasers are used daily and my students enjoy having an extra eraser. My students are learning to be responsible with their pencils. Each Wednesday, I collect their pencil pouches. If the student has all six of their pencils in a pouch, they get a small lollipop. If they loose a pencil or forget to turn them in, they do not get a treat. It is amazing how well this procedure works. Almost every student makes sure they have all of their pencils. I sharpen the broken pencils and my floor is clean since they try hard to keep them in their pouch. I passed out the plastic crayon boxes and labeled each box with the student's name. The flimsy cardboard boxes often get torn or the bottom of the box breaks. We love the plastic crayon boxes which are sturdy and last the whole school year. They are definitely protecting our brand new crayons.\r\n My boys absolutely love the 3-d puffy Mindcraft stickers! They get big smiles on their faces when they earn that sticker. However, thanks to your generosity, we now have 3,200 colorful puffy stickers which include adorable pets, flowers, trucks, cars, unicorns, outer space, fruits, deserts, sea animals, zoo animals, farm animals, and many other cute themes. Students love earning stickers to collect in their sticker books. I notice that they like to count how many stickers they earn at different times in the year. This reinforces number fluency which will strengthen math skills. During Open House my first graders will proudly show their parents their sticker collection.\r\n Thank you for funding our entire project! They told me that our Eerie Elementary read-aloud was one of their favorite things we did all year.\r\n\r\nBeyond the excitement, these books provided meaningful opportunities to teach important reading skills. We practiced making predictions, identifying key details, determining the main idea, making inferences, describing characters, using context clues, summarizing, and supporting our thinking with evidence from the text. Because my students were so invested in the story, these skills felt less like isolated lessons and more like tools they needed to solve the mysteries alongside the characters.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom is about building a community of readers. We read independently, with partners, in small groups, and together as a class. Two of the fern plants died. We quickly got the idea to cover up the gaps that let air in with plastic wrap. Now, our plants are thriving! \r\n In March, we read Dr. Seuss books to celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday in conjunction with Read Across America. Students read a few books that day and took at least one AR reading quiz on their computer. The next day, I rewarded students with Dr. Seuss stickers from our funded project. My students love to collect stickers in their sticker books. During Open House students will show their parents all the stickers they earned this year (Many students count their stickers which reinforces number fluency skills).\r\n The hot air balloons, cupcakes, and doughnut hanging lanterns brightened our ceiling this year! Students love coming into a colorful inviting room and enjoy the beginning of each month as I change our beautiful ceiling decorations! \r\n The laminating pouches have been used throughout this year to laminate student artwork, vocabulary words, classroom posters, and the front and back covers for their memory books. In a few weeks, Open House will arrive and I know my students will be excited to show parents their memory books, art/writing projects, and work on our walls. I like when students work together when completing puzzles. This helps students learn about teamwork which they will need when they enter the workforce.\r\n Everyday students enjoy watching our plants grow. We watched ferns and a snake plant. Students used a spray bottle to create moisture inside the terrarium. Our plants are thriving and the moss branch decoration adds character to our terrarium. Our terrarium light is helping our plants get the proper amount of light in our classroom that has no windows.\r\n Open House is around the corner and students will get the chance to grow peas, flowers and beans as part of our plant unit. Our propagation station has 4 glass bulbs full of water and cuttings from plants growing roots. I choose cuttings from a pothos plant, dwarf water lettuce, and peace lilly to show how water makes the roots grow on plants. It was incredible to watch this process! \r\n Thank you for our carpet sweeper. Each day students are happy to run the sweeper over our carpets. This sweeper picks up bits of construction paper, pencil shavings, broken crayons and any dirt on the carpet. Our sweeper gets a daily workout in our room!\r\n Thank you Campbell Foundation for funding our entire project! My students love watching their bean seeds sprout and grow. These resources definitely got my young students interested in science. They had fun planting their seeds and they plan to take them home to plant in their backyard gardens.
