Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Almost all of my students come from underprivileged backgrounds. The total minority enrollment is 95%, and the official number of students who are economically disadvantaged is 81% (underestimate.) Despite being keenly aware of the daunting odds facing them, my students show up and work hard to make their dreams come true. It is humbling to see kids come to school with focus and determination knowing some of them are living in shelters, foster homes and other incredibly difficult circumstances. They are by and large good kids- well behaved, kind, thoughtful, intelligent, creative, responsible- each with gifts that can benefit society.
I have a PhD in microbiology and immunology and many years experience in research.
I try to enrich the students not just on a scientific level but culturally, psychologically and even spiritually as well. Therefore, I am holistic in my approach, and strive to create an atmosphere of learning- infused with beauty, safety and healing. All students encouraged to have self-love, connection, dreams, and the skills to achieve them- all in the Spirit of service and gratitute.
My Project
I teach students with Special Needs and having access to calming sound is essential at times. Presently, the only speakers we have are associated with a smart board, and are best used as an instrument of torture rather than an educational tool. Even I get agitated by the quality of the sound. Since audio/visual capabilities are an integral part of education, this is a huge problem. Please help me to create an atmosphere that can offer my students the best chance of feeling safe and therefore able to concentrate. Furthermore, it will enable me to expand their lives culturally with everything from Chopin to Jazz to Native American Flute music etc.
