After 30 years at the bench working at some of the best research institutes in NYC, I have the expertise to teach my students cutting edge science. However, our school does not have resources for a molecular biology or microbiology lab. Fortunately, exciting new areas of research lie in bio-computing. There is an enormous amount of data available on pubmed and other sites that can be mined in computer based research. This project will enable students to do real cutting edge research as they are introduced to this exciting field. The human genome project is old news now, and we now have the ability to sequence the entire human genome in hours time. Furthermore example, single cell sequencing using 10X technology has made available huge amounts of data on the RNA level- just begging to be analyzed in new and exciting ways. By taking advantage of this exciting opportunity- my students can strengthen their college applications and demonstrate they are indeed pre med material. I also anticipate that they will be able to publish their work, and compete in contests like the Regeneron Science Talent Search.
