Help me give my students the gift of inclusion. A portable speaker with microphone will help at our weekly Best Buddies meetings to make sure everyone's voice is (literally) heard and help with our summer dance program.
Our campus prides itself on being a place where "All means all". Efforts have been made over the years to make sure that all students have opportunities to have an enriching and fulfilling high school experience. Through the Best Buddies club on campus, initiatives to including students with disabilities in school wide events are born. The students meet once a week during lunch to foster 1:1 friendships and meet outside of school to form life-long friendships.
Because the students in my class are impacted by cognitive and developmental disabilities, navigating social situations can be a challenge.
Through Best Buddies, there is a safe space to socialize with peers, learn social pragmatics, and feel that they are important members of the school community.
My Project
Being a teenager is hard enough as it is, and for many students with intellectual and developmental disabilities, these challenges are magnified. The Best Buddies Club is a place where students can learn important pro-social skills as well as develop friendships with individuals they might not cross paths with otherwise. The Best Buddies meetings involve lots of activities to help facilitate conversations and just to have fun.
Music is a powerful tool to bring people together; this has been my witness as a Best Buddies Club advisor year after year.
To help facilitate this, a speaker would help so everyone can hear the music, rather than just a few people on someone's phone.
Additionally, we have many club announcements that need to be made where the use of a microphone would greatly assist.
