Speak Your Truth: The Art and Craft of Storytelling

Help me give my students the lifelong gift of storytelling. The Moth would send storytelling experts to work with a selected group of 10th, 11th, and 12th graders after school for eight weeks.

My Students

My students are not just academically focused, but they are also blossoming artists. Teaching at a school that is dually focused on academics and the performing arts, I aim to bring creativity and authenticity into my classroom. I use the PRX storytelling platform, The Moth, in my classroom to teach storytelling, an act that has the ability to bond listeners and speakers and to develop confidence in young people. Students learn to create art through spoken word and the craft behind a written story, as well as the power of sharing one's truth.

My Project

I value the gift that storytelling offers to young people, building charisma, confidence, and connections.

The Moth Public Radio Platform is willing to conduct a spring residency program at LaGuardia to work with a small team of selected 10th, 11th, and/or 12th graders on storytelling, culminating in a story slam, a classic element to The Moth's fame.

The residency would include Moth storytelling experts and resources for the student storytellers as they brainstorm, draft, refine, and ultimately, present their stories for an audience, inspiring others and passing on the art of spoken word. This program would last for eight weeks, selected student storytellers and The Moth's storytelling leaders meeting for two hours once a week after school, ultimately leading to a story slam.
