Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Art will change students and my students need the arts to discover their own potential, as they face many hardships daily, as the school is extreme high poverty. My school is a Title I (100% free breakfast and lunch) school where students face many challenges before even entering the school building.
The students need the arts in order to discover their own potential and to see that there are other perspectives and opportunities outside of their environment.
Art is a visual language and the work they create will help students in all academics, as they will be writing, sketching and designing daily. I hope that the arts will be able to empower students to see their potential.
My students are passionate and striving to better themselves despite the hardships they face daily outside the classroom. I try to create a place of comfort and healthy expression for my students.
My Project
This summer I am incredibly excited to be attending Penland School of Crafts through a DonorsChoose.org grant to develop a new avenue of material exploration for my middle school students. As a Title I public school teacher, I often spend my personal finances in my classroom and purchasing essentials for my students, and financial support for the materials of the workshop will be a necessity.
The opportunity to have a full program immersion with other art teachers, artists, and professionals in their field is a gift.
It allows for discussions of best practices in classrooms as well as creative connections. Attending Penland allows my "cup to be refilled", and I am able to share this gift of the creative Penland experience throughout the year with my students. It is essential for me to maintain my passion for teaching, as I return to my school with renewed creativity and compassion.
I will be taking an exciting wearable design class, focused on the idea of adornment, especially with hair jewelry. My students are a worldy community and I am eager to learn more about adornment from throughout the world to share with them. I am also interested in the multicultural aspect of the wearable mediums and hope to celebrate the students' cultures through the in-class projects I will develop from my Penland experience.
I am requesting metals from the suggested material list from Penland School of Crafts in order to complete my final projects.
