Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am honored each day to teach my students who are problem solvers, proactive, present, and positive. They help one another and work as a team in all that they do. My learners go above and beyond in the classroom, despite daily inequities they face. We are a Title I school located in the Opportunity Zone with a large English Language Learner population. My students have taken on the transitional challenge of third grade, eager to develop complete understanding.
We use a growth mindset dialogue, and before any assessment or task, my class chants 'I believe I can do it' to themselves after five deep breaths.
My students are excited to learn about the world each day; they are on a path of self-discovery. Mondays are for mindfulness and taking care of ourselves. On Tuesdays, we 'travel' to different countries around the world through videos and add the places we see to our passport books. On Wednesdays, they discover what they want to be when they grow up. On Thursdays, my students teach the class and myself about a topic they feel they are an expert on. They get choice and can express their abilities in a variety of ways.
My Project
Our literacy curriculum involves an entire quarter/unit on "Peter Pan" which sparked student's interest in the fantasy genre.
My students were on the edge of their seats daily when it came time for the read-aloud of the day's chapter.
It was engaging, intriguing, and enriching. Students were exposed to and learned a wide variety of transferable words through this genre as well. Students were craving more access and opportunity to engage with similar books. The collection of the Never Girl book series will provide students with connection to "Peter Pan" while also providing new, cultivating vocabulary and experiences to keep them interested.
Students have also ignited a curiosity of animals through science lessons in the classroom. The "Who Would Win?" series provides students with an exciting and interactive experience while learning different characteristics about various animals. This pertains to our taught concepts of animal traits and benefits of animals living in groups. The animal drawing guide will help students express their sense of intrigue for animals in more ways than just context learning and writing; it will tune into their creative expression.
