My students need science materials including grow kits, butterfly habitats, microscope and more that will provide them with hands-on experiences and help them develop investigative skills.

My Students
Did you ever meet a first grader who didn't wonder about the world around them? My students are full of questions and eager to make their own discoveries. We need live insects and plants to help us understand growth and change and science materials that will allow us to explore and experiment.
My 27 first-graders are eager learners who best develop understanding through hands-on experiences.
More than half of the students in the classroom are English-language learners. Many of the other students in the class would benefit from academic-language development as well. We are a Title-One school with 70% of the students receiving free lunches. Most of the students do not have access to science materials outside of the classroom.
My Project
My students will have the opportunity to observe the growth cycle and metamorphosis of a variety of insects. They will be collectively involved in the care of the insects, which will contribute to building responsibility and collaboration in our classroom community. Students will also have the opportunity to witness the change and growth in plant life. In addition, the students will have ample materials for experimenting and making their own discoveries. As the materials spark their scientific thoughts, they will be able to record their inquiries and observations by writing and drawing pictures in their own science journals. I am hoping to nurture the love of science that will continue throughout their lives.
My eager first-grade students are ready to learn and make new discoveries.
First grade is a time of wonder, a time when students ask questions to help them understand themselves and the world around them. It's a perfect time for them to learn about the scientific process. I encourage all of them to continue to ask questions and seek answers.
