My Students

This is my fifth year teaching, my third year teaching fourth grade math and science. Each day, I get to work with 42 amazing students who love learning as much as I do.

Being a teacher is more than just teaching-I am a nurse, a second parent, a counselor, a child's personal cheerleader, and more!

I can't have a bad day, because my students have enough going on in their lives already. I don't leave work at work, and I am not just talking about bringing papers home to grade. I sit at home thinking about them when I am with my family, or reading a book before bed. They are my "kids," and I can't imagine not knowing them. Seeing their smiling faces, their warm hugs, and their love for math, especially science, makes teaching worthwhile. I would not want it any other way!

My Project

According to a national study sponsored by the Kaiser Family Foundation, the average child spends over 8 hours a day watching t.v., listening to music, and playing video games, and less than four minutes a day leisurely reading informational/nonfiction text! Just FOUR minutes!

Today's Common Core standards place a strong emphasis on reading nonfiction across all grade levels, thus the importance of exposure to informational texts is crucial!

Students prefer to read fictional pieces, because reading nonfictional pieces can be a challenge; they lack the background knowledge to comprehend what they are reading. With limited nonfiction resources in the classroom, a science scholastic subscription would be a great supplemental reading resource! By reading the magazines, students will be exposed to content they don't typically read. In the process, students will strengthen their comprehension skills, while continuing to build critical content knowledge and vocabulary. Naturally, their curiosity will be sparked with science topics they find interesting.

I can already picture my students sprawled out in the classroom, reading the magazine independently or with a partner! If they already love science class, they will absolutely LOVE reading more about science with the SuperScience Scholastic magazines!
