My Students
My students are amazing. They come to school prepared to learn and try their best to achieve our high expectations every day.
Our school is located in a low-income area with most students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.
Most of my students have limited resources outside of school, so our school may provide their only chance to experience enriching activities. My goal every year is to create an environment that is warm, safe and welcoming while maintaining a fun, creative learning atmosphere.
My Project
"Give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he will eat for a lifetime!" My students are thirsty for STEAM education, and I want provide an opportunity to spark STEAM learning at home.
The STEAM and literacy resources that will go into each STEAM bag will fully support the Next Generation Science Standards for second graders.
Students will ask questions, make observations, and gather information to simple problems that can be solved through the development of a new or improved object or tool. They will also develop simple sketches and or drawings to prove their theories. Each bag will contain a QR Code and written directions that explain the contents of the bag. Each bag will also have a variety of coding, building, designing, literacy, and math tools to be used at home with families.
Many of my students have never thought about a career in STEAM, and I want open their minds to the endless possibilities. Empowering families is the key to making this project successful. Parents will have the opportunity to help with guidance, decision making, prototyping, and troubleshooting. This will help build parent competencies to promote STEAM learning at home. Family Engagement in STEAM education is the key to funneling more students into STEAM careers.
Computer science and math is becoming infused into all areas of our lives. I want to encourage parents of kids who might feel like science isn’t for them to look closely at a hobby or interest of theirs and find the science, technology, engineering, and math involved. This can provide an avenue to higher education and ultimately lead to jobs needed to shape
