Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have an energetic, inquisitive, and enthusiastic group of 26 seven and eight-year-olds in the inner city of Providence, Rhode Island. My second graders are always eager to come to school and love to read, write and problem solve in such thoughtful and creative ways! My students are so appreciative of each other and all that we do every day. They are culturally diverse and enjoy sharing their own unique experiences with the class.

Many of my students have special needs and also special talents so we learn so much from each other.

My school is working hard to build community among families and staff, and we have a safe, respectful environment.

My Project

Just as children are more likely to listen to or talk to a peer, that same feeling applies to puppets. Research shows that using puppets in education has many benefits, especially with language skills. Children can practice their oral speaking skills by telling a story to a puppet or explaining words or expressions.

Puppets are magical creatures for early childhood settings.

They can give instructions, turn tears to laughter and be used in imaginative play by small hands and large. Using puppets to engage early learners offers multiple benefits across the curriculum and for social/emotional development.

When students write plays, foremost in many of their minds is how they will look, how they will sound, and how others will respond to them. Writing for the puppet allows them to be far more silly, as well as take risks with accents, characters, and plots that they wouldn't try if they were required to act it outlive. Not only does it help them learn the content as well as writing skills and dialogue formatting, but they also learn important lessons in collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity.

We would really love to have the opportunities to explore and express our feelings with these puppets and also create our own original shows with them.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read our project and find out a little about our classroom. We really appreciate your interest and attention and any help at all is extremely appreciated.
