Spark the Curiosity: Building a Hands-On Science Discovery Lab

Help me give my students spark their curiosity through hands-On learning in science discovery lab.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Ask a room full of seventh graders what a scientist does, and most will describe someone in a lab coat, far away, doing something they’ll never get to try. That gap, between science as something students read about and

science as something students DO, is exactly what Spark the Curiosity is built to close.

This year, our Grade 7 team has taken on a newly combined science and history teaching load, and while I have spent the summer preparing to teach science with the same energy and rigor as history, I am starting with an empty supply closet.

Right now, science instruction in our classroom means describing a chemical reaction instead of watching one happen, drawing a cell instead of looking through a lens at a real one, explaining a simple machine instead of

building one. Spark the Curiosity puts real, hands-on science equipment directly into students’ hands: microscopes to reveal a hidden world, lab kits that let a hypothesis turn into an actual result, and building materials that turn abstract concepts like force, motion, and ecosystems into something students construct with their own hands.

This project is designed as a shared investment: materials and inquiry-based research assignments will be divided among the entire Grade 7 Science and History teaching team, meaning every Grade 7 student will benefits, and every teacher gains a partner in building a more curious, more capable classroom.

When a student mixes a solution and watches it change color, adjusts a microscope focus until a cell snaps into view, or builds a model bridge and tests how much weight it can hold before it fails, they are not memorizing

science, they are EXPERIENCING SCIENCE, they are doing it. That shift, from passive recipient to active investigator, is where real interest and real understanding begin.
