My Project

My second graders are a vibrant group of seven and eight-year-olds who are transitioning from learning to read to reading to learn. What makes them truly special is their boundless curiosity, enthusiasm, and love for cooperative learning. At this pivotal age, they thrive when they feel secure, comfortable, and independent. My primary goal for this project is to foster a nurturing classroom environment that supports their growing academic skills, accommodates their physical need to move, and helps them build essential self-regulation habits. Creating a cozy, flexible reading oasis will give my developing readers an inviting space to explore books and build their comprehension skills. The couch and bean bags will offer a comfortable escape from standard plastic chairs, encouraging students to sustain their independent reading stamina for longer periods. To enhance this peaceful zone, the soft lighting will reduce the harsh glare of overhead fluorescent bulbs. This simple change creates a calm, sensory-friendly environment that helps young learners decompress, regulate their energy, and focus deeply on their stories. Practical organization and colorful visual aids will further empower my students to take ownership of their learning. The seat sacks will keep their personal notebooks and pencils right at their fingertips, minimizing transitions and maximizing our precious instructional time. Additionally, we will use the colorful markers to build interactive anchor charts together. These bright, highly visual reference tools will stay displayed around the room, serving as a constant guide to help my second graders confidently master new reading and math concepts.
