My students need 20 copies of "Phineus L. MacGuire...Erupts!: The First Experiment", by Frances O'Roark Dowell.
This project expired on December 29, 2008.
Hooray! This project is fully funded
I teach at an Animal Science Magnet school which is also a Title 1 school in an inner city community. I teach reading and writing for third graders who are exceptional students. One of my classes is a math academy class and one of my classes has students with learning disabilities and special needs.
I teach at an Animal Science Magnet school where all of the children come there because they have an interest in science. Third grade is the first year they have to come up with their own idea for a science project and complete it independently. These children have a passion for science and experimenting with the world around them.
All of my students come to my school because they love animals and science. Also in third grade they are asked for the first time to participate in the school science fair on their own creating a project on their own.
This book covers many different science project ideas and vocabulary. I teach writing, so I would also use this book to teach writers craft to my students and talk about what good writers do. There are many reading comprehension strategies that can be taught at the same time with science and writing skills.
I have so many teaching ideas for this book and can't wait to share it with my students. I believe that quality literature makes more of a learning influence than the boring old reading books provided by the district.
You have the chance to make a difference in my student's third grade year this year and many classes to come. You are supporting their growth in writing, reading, and science.
