Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Spanish to first grade students at a dual language school (English/Spanish) — the first in the city of Boston (1970) and in Massachusetts. Every student at our school is taught in English and Spanish. Most of my students started their journey in Kindergarten. They learn Spanish from Kinder through 1st grade learn in Spanish 80% of the day and in English 20% of the day. In my classroom there are some students who have little to no Spanish exposure, there some with exposure to the language outside of school and others that are fluent in Spanish mostly since they come from Spanish-speaking households. This makes our classroom a happier place to be, working with students of different cultures and backgrounds.
My Project
These books in Spanish will enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind. They will be able to choose books that interest them. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in Spanish reading. We also do an author study during first grade. I have selected Alma Flor Ada and Leo Lionni's author study collection to help support this project.
Additionally, students will be able to develop language using of the books and the games selected such as the Spanish Word Building Game.
What better way to learn than to incorporate some fun! These materials will make a tremendous difference in the classroom.
