Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are an energetic and diverse group of first graders who are eager to learn every day. Their diversity refers to their ethnic backgrounds and languages. I teach in the Dual Language Program, in which they will be learning Spanish. In Spanish they are learning literature, science, and social studies standards. Less than half of them speak Spanish at home, while the majority Spanish is their second, third, or even fourth language they are learning. Furthermore, the school I teach in is considered a Title I school, which means that most of our families come from a low socioeconomic status. Therefore, all students receive free and reduce lunch and resources are not expected to be provided by their families. It is amazing how far my students have gotten to in regards of their learning and Spanish skills.
The various backgrounds of students bring an amazing blend of culture to the classroom, but there are also challenges in providing them all the tools so they can succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.

My Project
Help me give my students the tools to succeed in their learning journey while learning a new language. My class consists of less than half of native Spanish speakers. Even though some of my students are exposed to Spanish at home, they do not speak Spanish. The learning of Spanish is based on syllables. Once my students learn all their syllables they will be able to decode text in Spanish. These tools, such as the games and phonic support will help them through the process while making learning engaging and fun. In the Dual Language Program visuals are essential for students to understand what is going on. Something as simple as color coding and breaking down sentences is tremendously helpful to improve comprehension. My students and I would be incredibly thankful for your support.
