My returning 1st and 2nd grade students were so excited that they would not have to wait on a 3-week station rotation to do each lesson! The KG students were able to learn about and explore the basic functions of the Finch Robot, build a K-W-L chart together (Know-Wonder-Learned), explore basic skills I showed them, learn through hands-on experimentation further robotics and coding skills, and teach one another what they learned. The conversations they were having with their partners and other partner groups were so exciting to listen to! The 1st and 2nd grade students jumped right back in with a quick review of how to use the app to code, the parts of the Finch Robot, and then a self-led exploration of the first two levels of coding blocks and their functions, sharing their learning afterwards whole group. The 1st-2nd graders also had a day of Finch Robot races (inspired by student interest) with different levels of coding challenges to push their skills and creative thinking.\r\n\r\nThe new, 30 high-quality sets of Evo Ozobot markers made it so each 2nd-5th grader could use their own during lessons rather than sharing with a partner. Several classes actually cheered when I introduced the new markers and your generous donation! This resulted in such a positive difference to student engagement and learning outcomes. Every student was more actively participating since they didn't have to wait on a partner to take turns with the markers, and the dual-tips helped students be far more successful with drawing color code boxes for special actions that their Ozobot would read correctly. Students developed and maintained intrinsic motivation this year since the robots were more responsive to their color coding efforts, and their resilience to errors and problem-solving skills also grew as a result. The students reviewed skills learned last year before tackling an Ozobot maze that put those skills and their problem-solving thinking to the test. After that, we focused on students creating their own Ozobot mazes and testing one another's out. They loved this creative challenge and the new markers played a huge part in it's possibility and success!\r\n\r\nAgain, thank you for choosing Midway Elementary's \"Coding & Robotics Supplies\" Donors Choose project to invest your money and faith in. I hope you feel it was a positive investment in student engagement and learning. Many of my students struggle to sit still, stay engaged, or block out distractions. Some become overwhelmed by noise or frustration, while others need movement to help them think clearly.\r\n\r\n Since receiving these sensory tools, I have already seen a meaningful difference in our daily learning environment. Items like the weighted blankets, stretchy worms, and noise-reducing headphones are giving my students safe, appropriate ways to meet their sensory needs without disrupting their learning or others. Instead of feeling frustrated or off-task, they now have tools to help them calm their bodies, refocus, and stay engaged.\r\nWhen my students are able to regulate themselves, I notice a big shift—they are participating more, taking more academic risks, and showing greater confidence in their abilities. These tools are not only supporting individual students but also helping create a calmer, more productive classroom for everyone.\r\n\r\n Most importantly, my students are beginning to recognize what they need and advocate for themselves, including being able to access these tools independently. These sensory supports are helping them build lifelong self-regulation skills that will benefit them both inside and outside the classroom.\r\n\r\n I am incredibly grateful for the support that made this possible. Students are also learning how to ask thoughtful questions, analyze informational texts, and support their thinking with evidence—skills that go far beyond this unit and will support them across all subjects.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is an active and collaborative experience. You would see students working in small groups, discussing what they've learned, and making connections between different tribes and their own lives. They use graphic organizers, participate in partner discussions, and share their thinking through writing and presentations. The materials you provided have made it possible for students to engage more independently and confidently with the content.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who were previously hesitant readers have shown incredible growth and excitement. One student, in particular, has become especially interested in learning about how tribes adapted to their environments and now eagerly shares facts with the class. Others are enjoying comparing lifestyles and storytelling practices across tribes, which has sparked meaningful conversations about respect, diversity, and history.\r\n\r\nYour support has truly brought this unit to life.
