My Students
Located in our nation's capital, my Title I school serves the needs of a diverse community of students and families, particularly English language learners. In my current classroom, at least six different languages are spoken among all of my students, each of them equally beautiful and complex.
At the beginning of my year, it is difficult for my students to speak with one another because of the obvious language barriers but as a family, we develop a sense of vulnerability and safety, and together we learn to make mistakes and trust one another.
Through this process, I see my students begin to develop friendships, despite their inability to fully communicate through words. This is one of the most humbling, profound experiences to witness, and it cannot fairly be described by the limitations of my own language.
I am proud to serve my students and will continue to work with my families to improve the well being of all people in fair, respectful ways.
My Project
My students are in a dual language program, which means they are learning in English and Spanish. While my classroom focuses on the English component of instruction, it is essential that I think of innovative ways to bridge the two languages. This model means that we look for ways to make connections between the two languages. One way to support this learning is through high-quality Spanish language texts.
I am requesting several 3rd grade Spanish language texts that can be used to develop literacy and broaden cultural understandings.
These titles include Conoce a Pablo Picasso, Vuelo del quetzal, En alas del cóndor, Paco: un niño latino en Estados Unidos, Festival de Calaveras, and Don Quijote para siempre.
These titles are exceptional because they are not just translations, but are representations of authentic language written by Spanish authors from a variety of Spanish speaking countries. We will use these texts during Independent Reading, where students will be able to read the texts and Spanish, and then we will discuss and write about the text in either Spanish or English. As well, we will use these books to search for cognates, which are words that have the same meaning and almost the same spelling or pronunciation across languages. Please help my bilingual students!
