Help me give my students the resources they need to succeed. Each one of these resources will aid my students to learn important facts about our nation and at the same time increasing their languages skills.
We are Roosevelt High School, located in the heart of the inner city in South Minneapolis, MN. Our student body is composed of a tapestry of cultures and languages which share one goal: "Come to learn, leave to serve."
My students are a group of amazing young people enrolled in our Spanish immersion program.
They are learning social studies, science, and Spanish while completing other requirements in English.
We incorporate a variety of learning strategies and activities to ensure that each student is learning both; academic contents as well as languages.
Our goal is to build our students' strengths so they will be able to help others, using their bilingual and academic skills. These young people represent the future of our city, and our country. They need the resources that can facilitate and increase learning.
My Project
I teach social science in the Spanish Immersion Program. Mostly, Immersion teachers use a regular textbook and translate it so that our students can receive (at least in parts) similar instruction as the students enrolled in regular programs.
Our greatest struggle is not learning in a foreign language; it is having access to the right material.
The resources, I am requesting, will provide visual context as well as allow more time for teaching, instead of translating. It is tough to find the right materials to teach any content in a foreign language.
However, regardless of the translations, many things cannot be transferred, such as images, graphs, maps, etc.
