I teach a small math intervention class for high school students where we work to develop confidence and skills in mathematics. My students' mathematics abilities are still impacted by the Covid disruption and we are working to help fill in some of the gaps that they still have from that time of irregular instruction they had in late elementary school. My students are getting better at multiplication, division, fractions, area, volume, and perimeter problems. I focus on giving students lots of choice about the types of numbers they get to work with. I call them \"just right\" numbers. As we are are moving into the fourth week of school this year, I am seeing my students start to stretch themselves and select numbers that are bigger or include decimals or fractions. \r\n\r\nPart of what has made them comfortable enough to do this is that our classroom meets their basic needs. They usually come to me very stressed. Many times this year they would come in and pick up a Yuck-E Ball and use it to help manage stress as we worked through the assignment together. I also had a student say to me \"I'm glad we have this [abiliputty] because I struggle with fine motor. After an update on our smart boards software, we are unable to use the electronic timer while slides are frozen, so having a simple, graphic timer has been a good addition.\r\n\r\nMy students were especially excited to see the fidget objects that I added to the classroom. I noticed how the use of cell phones has decreased, as for some students having something to manipulate is enough to keep them paying attention to lessons. We are so excited about our brand-new cookbook collection; it has already had a meaningful impact on the way our students are cooking and learning together!\r\nInitially, we began this project to fortify our Chef and Cookbook Report. During this assignment, students are tasked with researching a chef or cuisine and creating a poster showcasing what they've learned. In the digital age, it is harder than ever to teach students ethical research skills; we wanted students to get back to engaging with texts rather than skimming over Wikipedia articles. We started checking cookbooks out from the library during this project and asked students to read the introduction of their chosen cookbook, as well as identify a few recipes that looked delicious and interesting. Since introducing physical texts into this project, the work the students produced has become much more rich, meaningful, and personally connected. We truly believe that having the texts in their hands has encouraged students to make a more meaningful and memorable connection with their learning. Having our own cookbook collection in our teaching kitchen makes this type of learning possible all of the time, even when we're not focused on the Chef and Cookbook Report. \r\nJust last week, a student dropped in during lunch to consult with us about how to improve the curry he was working on at home. This student spent his lunch hour pouring over our Indian and South Asian cookbooks to absorb as much information as he could in his quest for the perfect curry!\r\nAnother student picked up a baking book off the shelf and used the guidance inside to make the most beautiful plaited loaves of bread for their final project. \r\nThese books encourage curiosity and push students to go beyond what our curriculum has to offer. I have been using the Social Emotional Learning curriculum books to develop lessons and we have been having excellent conversations, and I feel I have been able to give students tools they can actually use in their lives. We have been focused on emotional regulation tools recently, and I have made excellent use of all the amazing art supplies you donated! Students have been painting, drawing, puzzling, and fidgeting to help them maintain stability. We recently did a project where students were feeling agitated by things that had been going on nationally and we decided we would paint out our feelings. It was a really restorative day, and students reported feeling calmer after painting for 30 minutes. \r\nSoon we are going to begin a project where students will make a gift for someone they love by drafting and painting a picture onto pieces of wood. We have a construction class here and they have a lot of extra scrap wood, so to reduce waste we are going to use them in our classroom. Students are excited to create something with someone else in mind. We will be focused on the power of gratitude on our emotional wellbeing. In our next unit we are going to focus on the \"practicality\" of art and will be sewing! Students are excited and have already started planning out their projects and looking through the fabric squares to get inspired. \r\nThank you so much for prioritizing mental health and social and emotional learning curriculum. Although I was not able to get the original markers I had selected, the replacements have worked fine. Only having two sets of markers has encouraged students to share. Students enjoyed having higher quality paper and markers to work with. \r\n\r\nMy student who had originally asked for these materials was pleasantly surprised. It was great to be able to share them with him. It was nice for him to be able to see that it was possible to ask for something reasonable and then get that reasonable request. It is a fantastic ice breaker and helps students to relax and it gives us something to talk about. \r\n\r\nOne of the fidgets in particular has been a hit with a couple of ninth grade boys. It's a Shashibo, and it's an unusual sort of puzzle fidget. They walked by my room and saw it on my table and they decided to stop in. I didn't really know how it worked but one of the boys was an expert at it. So much so, that he told me that he has 31 of them! He started stopping by every day after school and would bring in different ones that he had and would show me how they all worked together when you had different multiples of them. He was like a wizard with them and every day our conversations became more and more in depth about not just the Shashibo, but about life and choices and the Shashibo was just a way for us to connect while we were able to talk about lots of other things. It provided a nice way for us to get to know each other. Without the grant, I would not have bought the Shashibo and I would not have gotten to know him, so I am very grateful for the gift of this fidget and the opportunity to get to know this student. \r\n\r\nI will continue to keep a variety of the fidgets out, and I will rotate them to keep them \"fresh\". They created Magic Lego Flowers and used them as a basis for their original fairy tales during our \"Magic Fish\"/ Magic Flower unit.\r\n\r\nWhen my students created their vision boards for 2025, they were able to use art supplies like mixed media paper and stickers. The held a vigorous discussion about teens and goal-setting and whether identity is fixed or evolving.
