My first graders are a bundle of energy and everything we do and learn is exciting to them. They love tinkering on Tinker Tuesday and they enjoy writing thank you notes on Thank You Thursday. They care about each other and they love school.
Every child deserves the opportunity to learn and grow.
Our school is a high poverty school and teachers and staff work together to provide the best learning experience with the resources we have. We work hard to close the achievement gap poverty creates. My students are eager to learn, but sometimes meeting the needs of twenty-six students can be difficult.
My Project
Sometimes students struggle to regulate emotions and behaviors. A child may come to school stressed or something may trigger an emotion that they are not sure how to deal with. This may cause the child to shut down or cause a disruption preventing learning for both the child and others. Sometimes if students are given a little space to move or think, they can get their emotions in check and rejoin the group.
Having a sensory area will allow students to take a break to regulate and then rejoin the class when they are ready.
A timer will help students manage the length of the break. This alternative to leaving the classroom and missing instruction is invaluable.
Alternative seating will allow them to move or wiggle without disturbing others. Sometimes students need a quiet space and having so many students makes it difficult to ensure it will always be quiet. Sound cancelling headphones will help students tune out the noise, so they can concentrate.
