Our school is a Title I school where we try to "outside the box" to provide the always-changing resources needed to coordinate with the current educational standards, and also provide for student creativity.
I am fortunate enough to be teaching a great group of creative, technologically driven, sixth graders.
They work hard and they are eager to explore, discover and learn.
This group of students comes from a small, rural school that houses less than 300 students in kindergarten through sixth grade. Most of the students come from low-income and low socioeconomic status homes. Our school struggles to provide funding for educational needs, let alone extracurricular activities.
My Project
I am a Science geek masquerading as a 6th grade Reading teacher. I am constantly trying to find ways to bring science into my curriculum. The resurgence of rocket launches by Space X, NASA, and others has given me the opportunity to spark in my students a curiosity about the history and future of space exploration. It also is a great opportunity to introduce students to applied science practices and future careers. I even have "NASA Thursday" where students and myself wear NASA inspired clothing to school.
Who hasn't looked at the stars and been in awe?
The use the telescope will allow my students to track all five of the classical planets, major bright stars, and significant satellites both during the day and at night (on special occasions). We will be following Space X's launch of DART and making predictions based on the hypothesis that a rocket can change the trajectory of an asteroid. My hope is to spark love of science that might lead to future applied science careers for my students. Who knows? I may have a future Neil Armstrong or Elon Musk sitting in my classroom.
