Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year, my students are a very special group of first graders. They have a lot of energy and are full of curiosity. This year, my class is mainly made up of students who are 6 and 7 years old. My students are highly motivated by hands-on learning and are willing to try unfamiliar tasks. My main jobs will be to promote strong technology skills on multiple devices and a solid foundation in reading. My students will need these skills to succeed in academics and the new jobs in technology.
Literacy is crucial to their future.
My students will need an engaging way to build literacy skills. The neighborhood surrounding my school consists of middle-income and low-income housing. Many homes don't have technology that small children have access to. They may have working parents that have little time for reading and re-reading books. The listening center, headphones, and rug will make a great space to read new and familiar books and help students practice their reading skills. This center will create strong readers and a love for reading.
My Project
My first-grade students enjoy listening to and learning from stories of all types. Throughout the day I read stories aloud to the class. We enjoy all genres and I try to select different topics each week. My students also like to read on their own. I provide hundreds of books for them to read in class and take home. However, there is more time to read! Each day, we have reading workstations. At each station, they are involved in some type of language arts activity. I would like to add a listening center and headphones to this rotation. Students will sit on the rug I requested and listen to stories on CDs. Students will learn to use this technology on their own so whenever there is a moment, they can enjoy a book. The new rug and listening center with headphones will create a beautiful new space for learning.
