My Project

In 2022 - 2023, the SWC School District implemented an online high school option for all students living in the district, as well as an opportunity for open enrollment for those who live outside the district. Students have indicated that class size, class availability, and mental health are some of the top reasons for enrolling in online classes.

In order to build a cohesive online community, our staff has created an in-person community night so that the online members can gather, connect, and learn.

The community night will include Spherobots, interactive games, student work display, a Q&A session with a Microsoft employee, and hopefully a binary code keychain activity and prizes for the interactive games.

The funds from this grant would be used to purchase general materials such as name tags, markers, a game-based spinning wheel, prizes, and the materials for the binary code keychains.

This event is not only an opportunity for the online students and community members to gather in person, but also to participate in standards-based, hands-on STEM activities. The binary code keychains use binary numbers and pony beads to create a keychain that represents a student's name or initials. Explaining how data can be represented using numbers/bits is the basis of how computers work and is a part of all computer programming classes. This activity allows students to review or learn and create at the same time.

The rubber ducks will be prizes for interactive team-based games. These games will provide an opportunity for the online students to work together in a face-to-face environment. Rubber ducks will be used as prizes because in the coding world, a rubber duck can be a debugging buddy. Coders "talk through" an issue with the rubber duck and just by doing so, they often find the solution.
