Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This group of students are 90% Title 1 students. For most of them, English is not their primary language. This camera club will allow them to share what they have learned in school and use it in their homes in small groups. They have such passion, but need a more hands on approach to learning.
In an advisory circle, they shared how they find school boring and how it is never real to them. Also, how school does not let them share their culture. They asked why this was and if there was anything they could do about it. We discussed they could start a club and then from there petition the administration.
By being able to work in groups and film things from their homes, it will help us to see areas they need to work on in their education. They will be doing presentations about real life things like percents and discounts. They will learn and interview people where they live and learn their stories and hurdles in life. But they will be coming up with projects that motivate them.
In Their Own Words
Our goal is to use what we learn in our area but also show our culture! We want to use Spanish and English. We want to make it real and show the amazing cultures our group has. We have a common bond of our group coming from Latin countries and want to share education but tie in our culture so others can see how beautiful it is and why we are so proud.
Our teacher will give us prompts and allow us time to upload the videos and pictures to create powerful slide shows and videos. He will put us in circles and we will as a group decide what topics to choose. We will tie in an educational standard with our culture each time. He will meet with us in a club after school to make this happen.
Our school is over 75% Latin. However, we do virtually nothing with it to bridge education and our culture. We need to share our culture with education to show how great learners we are but also how beautiful are culture is.
