My Students
In first grade, learning is doing. I work in a brand-new STEM school in Utah teaching 30 wiggly, enthusiastic 6-year-old students. Student learning gains from direct instruction pale in comparison to those gained through engaging, kinesthetic, collaborative learning tasks.
My classroom is a place where learning is loud, hands-on, student-centered, and rewarding.
Students spend much of their day in small groups working on interactive educational tasks to both learn and teach concepts to one another. It is a place where students are excited to come to school each day and discover and learn through fun, purposeful activities.
My Project
I have a plethora of engaging books for a listening center and a computer-based literacy program that I want my students to use each day in centers. While the potential impact of these centers is large, I lack the tools my students need to fully utilize these resources.
My students need sturdy, reliable headphones they can use to build their literacy skills by using electronic resources.
These tools will improve fluency and comprehension in my students and will foster a love of literacy. These resources will fully engage students in learning and will help them enjoy the journey of learning to read.
My students also need tools to build their social skills in relation to peers. They need practice with win-loose situations, conflict resolutions, and partner work. Having these games will help students develop these social skills. These skills will transfer not only to games but to academic tasks, such as group projects and partner work. I am excited to walk around my classroom and hear the sounds of students developing social skills through play.
