Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

IS 339 is a Title 1 school in the Bronx. Last year, 96% of our predominantly minority student population qualified for the free lunch program. In the past the school's scores on state standardized tests have been poor, but we have a new principal who is trying to turn the school's academic record around with technology. As a sixth grade social studies teacher at IS 339 I plan on incorporating computer presentations and computer based activities into every one of my lessons. It is my hope that the central role of technology in my classroom will help students make significant gains in social studies, reading and writing. This year, music and sound will be an important part of my daily classroom environment. To that end I will need a simple 2.1 computer speaker system so students will be able hear the music I play off of my classroom laptop. The speakers will be used to invest students in learning about the cultures and peoples of the Eastern Hemisphere. Students who listen to a foreign culture's music get a better understanding and appreciation of that culture. The New York sixth grade social studies curriculum deals with the history of the Eastern Hemisphere. It requires that students are given “specific examples,” of “cultures other than the student's own.” International music will serve to connect students with the curriculum and make foreign cultures more real and exciting. Once students make a personal connection with the material they are studying, content mastery and significant gains will quickly follow. The speaker system will also have a central role in my classroom economy. Every week in my class, students who meet basic behavior and academic requirements receive a salary of thirty “scholar dollars.” They can use their “scholar dollars” to purchase items from the classroom store. Items range from school supplies to “get-out-of-homework-free pass.” I also want students to be able to purchase individual songs off the Apple iTunes store with their class salaries. The songs will be added to a class mix, which will be played at various times throughout the period using the computer speaker system. The class mix will invest students in the classroom environment and give students a sense of ownership over one aspect of their learning environment. The 2.1 computer speaker system will help make world history more real and applicable for all of my students. Moreover, the speakers will help create a vibrant classroom culture. These two factors will spur on student achievement and help prepare my students for high school. Thank you for your time and generosity!
