Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are in a poor, underprivileged section of the city. They do not have a lot of opportunities outside of school, so we, as a staff, work very hard to ensure we give them everything we possibly can while they are with us. While some students do not come to school with the necessary supplies they need to be successful, we never let them feel unworthy of what they need and deserve. Every student knows we have high expectations of them, and that we want them to always try their best. My first graders surprise me every day with their energy, willingness to try their best and take risks, how they are learning to be good friends, and learning to accept responsibility for their decisions.

My Project

There is so much learning to do in first grade! But how do you make it meaningful? The students need to make connections with what they are learning. Sometimes those are connections they verbalize, other times they are connections to make through art and creativity!

As a teacher of first graders, I can not imagine learning the life cycle of an apple tree without cutting out red construction paper apples and brown trees.

I could not read a book about spiders and bats without allowing them to cut out their own and label the parts. I can not dream of a Valentine's Day celebration without pink hearts and messages of friendship. These are the fun extensions of a lesson that students remember! These are the projects that we display in the hallway to show off what we've been learning. They are the cute creations that the students take home to their parents. But, you can not create without construction paper. This is not a material supplied to classrooms.
