My students are eager to learn, intelligent 1st graders who soak it all up! Sadly, a lot of people around them tell them otherwise. They grow up hearing they are poor. They won't graduate high school. They won't go to college. They could end up in jail. But I tell them differently. I tell them they can do anything they set their mind towards if they work hard. They love to read and get involved in new learning projects. Many of my kids love Science and Social Studies, but these subjects are being brushed aside. I am denying my students adequate exposure to other subject areas and their content due to an emphasis on math and reading. While my students have specific reading and math programs and an abundance of materials, we do not have the same for science and social studies. There is no school money to buy new materials. I have to be creative and make the subject matter fun!
