My future students are from a high poverty, rural community situated between sand dunes and a bay. They are learning how to take care of themselves and others in a very small school that feels like a supportive family. Our class is a combined Pre-K through Grade 2 classroom of 12 children. The older children get a chance to be leaders!
Coming from high poverty backgrounds, my students are especially in need of comfort and soothing.
I would like to provide my students with a comfortable, soothing learning environment so they can be ready to learn.
My Project
My students need more items in the classroom to be comfortable and to engage in soothing sensory exploration.
Meeting my children's sensory needs helps them be ready to learn.
Bean bag chairs, a sensory table, and fidget bands will help meet my children's sensory needs by providing soothing and comfort in my classroom.
One of my bean bags will be an important component of the classroom's "safe place." The safe place is where students can go to regain calm when they are upset. The enveloping feeling of the bean bag chair will soothe them as they practice active calming techniques. The other bean bag chair will provide a cozy and welcoming option for buddy reading in the library.
A sensory table in an essential element in an early childhood classroom. It will aid my students in developing their fine motor skills, provide an opportunity for positive social engagement, and will soothe and calm them.
Children are only able to learn when they are in a calm state. By providing my children with some soothing seating and sensory options, this project will significantly help my students stay engaged in their learning throughout the day. I am excited to provide my children with a welcoming and comfortable home away from home.
