SOOP (Stewards of Our Peninsula) Wetland Studies

My students need a microscope and a topsoil tour kit to be able to view samples collected on field investigations. This is the best way to provide all my students with the ability to view microscopic samples.

My Students

My MS students have provided monthly water quality data to the city council for over a year now. This was done to establish base-line data prior to eradication of the lake's invasive plants. This year the city will begin spraying and we want to monitor the wetlands that the lake drains into.

I teach science in a rural school district.

My class sizes are as large as 34 and average at 30 students per class. Our population is declining and therefore our levy based budget is in crisis and teachers are asked to teach large classes of students. It is almost impossible to purchase new technology.

My Project

In addition to the water quality tests my students will be able to conduct soil quality tests and make monthly finding reports to the City Council. This project will continue for 3-5 years and therefore students will have ample opportunities to consult with "real" scientists and be taught by them while monitoring changes over time. This year we want to explore and learn about wetlands and how they assist in improving water quality.

This project is important because it will allow my students to blossom to their fullest potential, explore career possibilities and learn about how politicians make difficult decisions about complicated issues.
