Songs & Audio Books Build Fluency!

My students need a CD and cassette player to be used both during our shared reading time and at our listening center.

My Students

Remember how enjoyable it was to listen to audio books? Or to sing songs together with your teacher and classmates? Our classroom CD & cassette player needs to be replaced in order for my students to be able to listen to their books and songs.

My students are a wonderful bunch of at-risk second graders who attend a rural school in Illinois.

Our school district has a high percentage of students who qualify for free and reduced lunch. Our school district has drastically cut our teacher supply budget because our state owes us money.

My Project

I love to begin every shared reading lesson with the song or poem. My students love to sing along and these songs help build their reading fluency. My students also love visiting the listening center to enjoy to phonics songs or to follow along with audio books. A listening center is a wonderful center for struggling readers to practice their fluency in a non-threatening way. However, my classroom CD player broke last year and I want my future students to be able to benefit from the songs and audio books as well.

Receiving a CD and cassette player for my classroom would give my students the opportunity to listen to music, poems, and audio books, which is such a vital part of literacy.

Audio books and songs help build fluency for every student, especially struggling readers. Please help me help my students become better readers!
